Research Field
Piano Pedagogy: A
Research and Information Guide
The purpose of this Research and Information Guide in
Piano Pedagogy is to provide a detailed
outline of resources available for research in piano
pedagogy. Descriptive information on reference works and
selected scholarly sources will inform and assist anyone
conducting research in piano pedagogy or training in
that field.
Part I, "Bibliographical Tools for
Research in Piano Pedagogy," will include indexing and
abstracting resources, bibliographies, research guides,
and encyclopaedias.
Part II, "General Works in Related
Disciplines," will introduce works from other fields
that are related to Piano Pedagogy. It will cover
general reference sources and present overviews of
research in such fields as research methodology,
psychology, psychology of music, education, music
education and music.
Part III, "Topics in Piano Pedagogy
Research," will highlight current sources on various
topics pertinent to the study of piano
pedagogy.
All these sources will encourage
scholars and students to find and use the broadest range
of sources to enhance the overall quality of their work.
Their research process will be made easier as this book
will direct them to both contemporary and older studies,
including indexation and bibliographical tools,
encyclopaedias, books, journal articles, audio and video
recordings and online sources.
A list of sources supporting
research in piano pedagogy in the 21st century must consider the
wide range of material that has been used for research
in the past, but also the continuing expansion of the
field into related areas. That is why we are proposing a
multidisciplinary approach to the study of piano
pedagogy. No longer limited to the field of music, this
study takes into account many other disciplines that are
bringing new and valuable knowledge to our understanding
of piano learning and piano teaching. Therefore,
sections of this book deal with research in cognitive
psychology, neuroscience, health sciences, biomedical
engineering, and new technologies. Their inclusion
demonstrates the breadth of the field today, and should
encourage new ideas for expanding
research.
